Hunter Schafer has become iconic as transgender high school student Jules Vaughn in the hit HBO series Euphoria. The show followers a group of high schoolers as they navigate sex, drugs, and love in the dark coming-of-age drama that's known not to shy away from real hard-hitting issues. Controversially, Hunter's performance has yet to earn her a Primetime Emmy Awards nomination, but Hunter has definitely made a huge impact with her first acting job.
Jules Has Been A 'Challenging' First Role
Hunter's acting abilities have been tested to the limit as she has had to portray a transgender teen with a heartbreaking backstory and issues of her own.
In the very first episode, Jules is the new kid in town. As a child, she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital and transitioned when she was thirteen. And Jules seeks out violent sexual interactions because, as Hunter explained in a video for the Euphoria Unfiltered series, Jules is in constant search of affirmation and 'love'.
“Jules being transfeminine and having this relationship to womanhood, seeing women in her life being treated a certain way by men, and a certain dynamic playing out in almost every interaction she’s witnessed…" said Hunter when talking about her character.
"I think it goes back to something deep-rooted, like transitioning, wanted to be treated a certain way by a man in order to feel like a woman in this very binary vantage point.”
How Did Hunter Schafer Get Famous?
Hunter Schafer stumbled upon a casting call for transgender girls on Instagram while she was preparing for her real-life plan — to go to fashion school after a year of modeling.
With no experience needed and her modeling agency hiring an acting coach for her, Hunter Schafer went for it, and that's how she became Jules. But before Euphoria turned Hunter's world upside-down, Hunter was a rising star in the modeling industry.
Hunter has modeled for some huge names and been a part of some huge projects as a transgender model, from Calvin Klein to Prada, to being proudly part of the Marc Jacobs' #GratefulNotHateful campaign during its 2018 Pride celebration. Projects were rolling in — now Euphoria has her career soaring.
Thanks to Euphoria, Hunter Schafer is a name people are not going to forget. The actress is still modeling, and another wonderful thing to come from the show is her relationship; fans were delighted to discover that Schafer is dating her Euphoria co-star Dominic Fike, who plays Elliot in the show.
