Malia Obama Graduates High School

Friday (June 10), as Malia Obama crossed the stage to receive her diploma at Sidwell Friends School, President Obama emerged from the audience of parents and loved ones to give his baby girl a standing ovation.

“He was just a total dad,” the mother of one of the graduates said. “No fanfare. You didn’t know they were there.”

Malia was one of 127 graduates. Sidwell Friends School, an institution that has reportedly educated the children of Bill Clinton, Herbert Hoover, Richard Nixon and Theodore Roosevelt, respected the first family’s wishes to have the event treated as a family affair.

Although the first family did their best to maintain a low-key vibe, this year’s commencement ceremony still had to be adjusted to accommodate such important attendees. The ceremony, which is normally open to the public, required tickets this year and attendees were led through metal detectors before entering the Zartman House administrative building where they were then seated.

Earlier this year, President Obama spoke on the Ellen DeGeneres Show of his faith in his daughter’s future.

“She’s one of my best friends,” he said. “And it’s going to be hard for me not to have her around all the time. But she’s ready to go. You can tell. She’s just a really smart, capable person and she’s ready to make her own way.”
