Born David Ross Cheriton on March 29, 1951, he briefly attended the University of Alberta then went to earn his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of British Columbia in 1973. He received his Masters and PhD degrees in computer science from the University of Waterloo in 1974 and 1978, respectively. Before moving to Stanford University in 1981, he spent three years as an Assistant Professor at his alma mater. He founded and led the Distributed Systems Group, which developed the V operating system, at Stanford.

In 1998, Cheriton invited two graduate students Larry Page and Sergey Brin to demo their project at his front porch. Along with Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim, he wrote a $100,000 check to the two to help them create their new search engine Google in 1998. That small investment has paid off though he didn’t flaunt his wealth.

David Cheriton is also an angel investor. He has co-founded three successful startups with Bechtolsheim including Granite Systems which is acquired by Cisco in 1996 and Kealia, bought by Sun Microsystems in 2004. Their latest venture is the Santa Clara-based Arista Networks that builds high-speed data switches and is competing with the likes of Cisco.
